Youth Development Philosophy
I believe that every young person has a superpower. Every young person possesses immense gifts and talents, with unlimited potential. As stewards of youth experience, it is our duty to provide them with the support, resources, and guidance they need to thrive. Central to my approach is the recognition of the uniqueness of each young person, acknowledging their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations. I am committed to creating inclusive and safe spaces where every voice is heard, valued and leveraged to inspire change, growth and development. Through this, I aim to cultivate a sense of belonging and encourage the exploration of identities, interests, and talents. I believe in the power of meaningful relationships in facilitating growth and development.

I believe in and actively practice Lerner's 5 C's of youth development—Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring (Lerner, 2004). I believe in the power of meaningful relationships in facilitating growth and development. By building trust and rapport with young people, I strive to create partnerships based on mutual respect and understanding. I view myself as a coach, mentor, advocate, and ally, dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of young individuals. I believe that they should have more than merely voice and choices but are entitled to experience full agency in their lives and participate fully in their own growth and development. In my practice, I prioritize a strengths-based approach, focusing on building upon the inherent strengths and assets of young people rather than solely addressing deficits. I believe in fostering resilience, self-confidence, and a growth mindset, equipping young individuals with the skills and mindset needed to navigate life's challenges and pursue their goals with determination and optimism. I am committed to lifelong learning and professional development, continuously seeking to enhance my knowledge and skills to better serve the needs of young people.
I recognize the importance of staying informed about current research, best practices, and emerging trends in youth development to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of my work, hence why I am enrolled in the youth development leadership program at Clemson University.

Incorporating play into my personal and professional life is crucial to me for several reasons. It provides stress relief. When I engage in playful activities I can feel stress melt away and my overall mental health improves. Play allows me to relax, have fun, and temporarily escape from the pressures of daily life. Play allows me to be creative and innovate. When I engage in playful activities, I can think outside the box and approach challenges with a fresh perspective. Play boosts my mood, increase feelings of happiness, and improves my overall emotional well-being. It encourages a positive outlook and helps me combat feelings of anxiety and depression. Play encourages continuous learning and personal growth. It keeps my mind active and engaged, promoting lifelong curiosity and a love of learning. By incorporating play into my personal and professional life, I enhance my overall quality of life, maintain a healthy balance between work and leisure, and foster a more joyful and fulfilling existence.
Ultimately, my goal as a youth development practitioner is to empower young individuals to realize their full potential, become active participants in their own development, communities, and contribute positively to society. I am deeply passionate about supporting young people on their journey towards self-discovery, growth, and fulfillment, and I am dedicated to making a meaningful and lasting impact in their lives.
